Mariah Carey Celebrates 30 Years of Holiday Icon “All I Want For Christmas”
Mariah Carey honors 30 years of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” in Vevo’s Footnotes, reflecting on its legacy.
Mariah Carey is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her timeless holiday hit, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” with Vevo’s Footnotes series. This special episode provides fans with an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the “Make My Wish Come True Edition” music video, a tribute to the golden age of Hollywood musicals.
Directed by Joseph Kahn, the video combines elaborate choreography with vintage cinematic glamour. Inspired by Busby Berkeley’s iconic visual style, Kahn set out to create the ultimate Christmas music video. Mariah reflects on the challenges of participating in the choreographed sequences, admitting that dancing is not her strongest suit. The dazzling Busby Berkeley-inspired scene, featuring dancers performing on elevated platforms, required hours of filming and multiple takes to perfect.
The video also features a series of special appearances. Mykal-Michelle Harris shines as a young Mariah, which Carey described as a meaningful reflection of her childhood: “She represents little me and all the kids who love Christmas!” Monroe and Moroccan, Carey’s twins, make joyful appearances alongside Cha Cha, her dog, continuing the tradition of including pets in her holiday videos. Additionally, director Joseph Kahn’s daughter, Josie, makes a charming cameo as an angel popping out of a gift box.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” continues to break records, topping Billboard’s Hot 100 for a fifth straight year in 2023. The song, now in its 30th year, remains a defining symbol of holiday cheer worldwide.
