Ed Sheeran returns with the nostalgic “Old Phone” and reveals new album “Play”, out Sept. 12.

Ed Sheeran has officially kicked off a new musical era with the announcement of his album Play, dropping September 12 via Gingerbread Man Records/Atlantic Records, and the release of its first single “Old Phone.”

The album draws inspiration from Sheeran’s global travels and musical collaborations, including Indian and Persian influences woven together with Irish folk—a soundscape that feels both borderless and deeply personal.

“This record encapsulates everything that I love about music,” said Sheeran. “It was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life… I wanted everything I do to be fun and playful.”

“Old Phone” is a fitting entry point. The song, produced by Blake Slatkin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, explores the emotional impact of rediscovering old texts from an unused phone, showcasing Sheeran’s talent for turning small moments into universal truths.

Ahead of its release, Sheeran launched the @teddysoldphone Instagram, sharing photos from the device that inspired the song. He’s also debuted “Old Phone” live in multiple impromptu appearances—from The Tonight Show to Nashville’s Santa’s Pub with Noah Kahan.

Play is available for pre-order now, with more playful surprises to come.
